Need to know about moving to Australia from NZ

Sea Freight from New Zealand to Australia

The great thing about shipping furniture to Australia with Ausmove is our fast turnarounds. Sitting in Australia, waiting for a container to arrive can be an expensive, frustrating, and stressful time. That’s why fast turnarounds are important. We always have a significant volume of sea freight to Australia from NZ, either getting packed up in New Zealand, waiting at the port or already on the water. We won’t be messing you around with vague timing and promises. Unlike others, we only ship from New Zealand to Australia, so we know exactly what we can and can’t do. The faster we turn your shipment around, the more money you save!

Here are our sea freight shipping options;

Consolidated or Groupage Container Service

A groupage or shared container is where your household goods are consolidated with other shipments, all travelling in the same shipping container to Australia. This means you only pay for the space you use, making it the most cost-effective sea freight option regardless of the volume. You might just be taking your office equipment, your tools of trade, your share of an estate, a few family heirlooms, a limited number of cartons, with clothing and other essentials, or your full house lot from New Zealand to Australia.

Did you Know…

If you’re moving a full house load you don’t have to take a sole use container. You can still send everything by groupage and save some money.

There’s no inconvenience or downside because all shipments are unloaded (for examination) upon arrival in Australia, irrespective of whether they’re groupage or sole use.

The only downside to groupage shipments is that transit times can be longer than the sole use option. That’s because they don’t get on the water until there’s enough freight to fill them. However, this issue is reduced by Ausmove’s high groupage volumes, and regular sailings. In most instances we can give you an actual vessel and sailing date. Alternatively, if you have family or friends to stay with in NZ, you could have your shipment picked up sooner, so it still arrives in Australia, when you need it.

Full Container Load (Sole Use Container)

Having your own sole-use container is a popular choice for many customers moving a full house from Auckland to Australia. We offer a range of container sizes, including 20-ft, 40-ft, and 40-ft high cubes, to suit every move size and budget.
In general terms, a two – three bedroom home’s worth of household goods will fit into a 20-ft container; this can be doubled for the 40-ft options. One of the primary benefits of a sole-use container is ‘peace of mind’. Your personal effects will not be travelling in a shared space with other shippers. If container availability allows, your shipment can be loaded and sealed directly, just be aware that this seal will be broken prior to delivery.

Although slightly more expensive than groupage, a sole-use container is the fastest sea freight option from New Zealand to Australia, often saving one to two weeks of transit time and reducing temporary accommodation costs. We can also consolidate your vehicle into the same 40-ft container as your household goods, which is an efficient and cost-effective way to ship a car from NZ to Australia.

We also handle shipping containers from Australia to New Zealand for customers returning home or relocating back across the Tasman.

Customs & Prohibited Items

What household items are prohibited from entering Australia from NZ?

Strictly prohibited items include: fresh fruit and vegetables, live plants (including cuttings, bulbs and roots), loose seeds, unprocessed spices, raw wool, unprocessed rawhide, flick knives, butterfly knives, daggers, pepper sprays, tasers, and counterfeit goods. Items requiring special preparation: outdoor equipment (lawn mowers, garden tools, bicycles, golf clubs, camping gear) must be spotlessly clean as any trace of NZ soil can trigger a quarantine cleaning fee of $200 or more per hour. Wicker, cane, bamboo and raw timber items are inspected for insect infestation. Vacuum cleaners must be thoroughly cleaned with the dust bag disposed of. Real pinecones, wreaths and straw ornaments may be seized or require gamma-irradiation treatment. Raw beeswax and honey products must be declared and may be inspected.

How do I prepare outdoor furniture and gardening tools for Australian Biosecurity?

These must be spotlessly clean. Any trace of NZ soil can trigger a mandatory quarantine cleaning fee ($200+ per hour).

What is the B534 form, and is it mandatory for moving to Australia?

The B534 Unaccompanied Personal Effects (UPE) Statement is a mandatory legal document required by the Australian Border Force for anyone shipping household goods to Australia. Without it, you cannot clear customs. It allows you to import used personal items (owned for 12 or more months) without paying 10% GST or customs duty, and provides biosecurity authorities with the information needed to assess whether a quarantine inspection is required. To complete it you will need: a photocopy of your passport, an Australian residential address, and physical signatures on all four pages (digital signatures are not accepted). Submit it to your shipping agent at least 7 to 10 days before your shipment arrives in Australia to avoid port storage fees.

Can I include alcohol or tobacco in my personal effects shipment?

Alcohol and tobacco can be declared on the B534 but are not covered by the UPE concession. The duty-free limits of 2.25L of alcohol and 25 cigarettes apply only to items carried on the plane. For unaccompanied shipments, all alcohol and tobacco is subject to full customs duty and GST. Excise duties in Australia are extremely high and the duty cost can exceed the value of the product. Including these items often triggers a manual assessment, which can delay the release of all your household goods and incur additional port storage fees.

What happens if I declare something incorrectly at Australian Customs?

Providing false or misleading information on your B534 is a serious offence. Australia applies a strict liability framework, meaning fines can apply even for unintentional errors. On-the-spot fines for failing to declare biosecurity items range from $340 to over $2,600 AUD. Prohibited or incorrectly declared goods may be seized and destroyed at your expense. Under-declaring new goods or failing to declare alcohol or tobacco can result in fines of up to three times the duty evaded. For non-citizens, serious or repeat breaches can result in visa cancellation and a three-year re-entry ban. Deliberate smuggling can lead to criminal prosecution and up to 10 years imprisonment.

Other Important Considerations

Can Ausmove help me move my car or motorbike from NZ to Australia?

Yes. Ausmove regularly ships private cars, motorcycles, trailers, quad bikes, caravans and other motorised vehicles to Australia. Vehicles can be packed with your household goods (if space allows), in a shared groupage container, or in a sole-use container. We assist with all paperwork, customs and quarantine processes. Note that certain import costs such as duty, GST and compliance testing are outside our direct control. Your vehicle must be clean and fuel-reduced prior to shipping to meet Australian biosecurity requirements.

What about relocating pets or specialty items (boats, artwork, motorcycles)?

Yes we provide these specialist moving services.

Do you offer packing and unpacking services in Australia?

The Australian delivery team will unpack your items at your new home as part of the same door‑to‑door service placing items on a flat surface. They will place items in the correct rooms and clear away packing materials.

Do I need to be present when my goods clear customs in Australia?

While you don't need to be there on the day, you generally must arrive in Australia within 6 months of your goods being imported to qualify for the duty-free concession. If your goods arrive and you do not travel to Australia within a reasonable timeframe, customs may deny the concession and charge full duty/GST.

How do I make a claim if my goods are damaged during the move?

If you need to make an insurance claim please make contact with our team who will guide you through the process.
